Okay, so for those who of you who may have wanted a write up and picks, here are my opening day baseball
picks!!
Brewers v Yankees: Even though the Yankees lost game 5 of the WS in calamitous fashion, and have lost Soto via free agency, they're still the Yankees with a stacked batting lineup! I have to take the home side in the Yankees.
Orioles vs Blue Jays: The O's are a team ready to break out, and I think this might be the year they do it! Especially because Toronto was suppose to do it in years past, but they haven't. I'm taking the away side.
Phillies vs Nationals: The Phillies had a calamatius October in the playoffs! However, outside of that, they've got a pretty deep lineup and one heck of a starting pitcher (Wheeler)! Also, since Washington won the WS in 2019, they've had players leave via free agency, traded, and/or retired. They haven't replaced those quality players, so this one seems like a no brainer to me. Back the Phils!
Red Sox vs Rangers: The Rangers won the WS in 2023. They still have a great team but didn't make the postseason last year to defend their crown. The Red Sox, however, have bolstered their lineup and pitching staff. This one is a "too close to call for me," but for some reason, I think the Red Sox pull this one out! (I have the Red Sox being a sleeper team this year!)
Pirates vs Marlins: Skenes is arguably one of the best pitchers in the league! He has single handily kept the Pirates in all of his games last season. I think he does the same tomorrow, so I am backing Pittsburgh in this one!
SF Giants vs Reds: Elly de la Cruz is already a top class player. SF signed Adames to a monster contract to bolster their lineup. Logan Webb is a quality pitcher, but so is Hunter Greene. Being an avid Dodgers fan, I can never root for the Giants in any circumstance (outside of betting of course). However, this one really is a "too close call for me," game. However, I think the Reds can pull it off at the end, so I'm backing the Reds in this one.
LA Angels vs Chi White Sox: The White Sox might be the worst team come the end of this season, as they were last when they lost an astounding 121 games! Meanwhile, the Angels, constantly in the shadows of the Dodgers, should rebound from a year they were expected to contend. (Especially since Mike Trout is back!) I like the Angels in this one!
Guardians vs Royals: Both teams come into this matchup with good spirits. However, I think I have to back the home side in this one! Give me Kansas City!
NY Mets vs Astros: I will always despise the Houston Astros after the cheating scandal in the WS of 2017! However, this one is another "too close to call for me." For lineups, I actually like the Mets; for starting pitching, I like the Astros. The age old saying "Good Pitching always beats good hitting," means the Astros should win. However, something about this Mets team feels like they can pull of the upset on opening day, so I'm going with them, the Mets!
Braves vs Padres: Another team that I can never root for is the Padres. And interestingly enough, I don't think I will be either in this case. And it's not because of my dislike of the team. I actually prefer Atlanta's lineup over SD's, and I also like Chris Sale as a pitcher more than King. (Had Sale been available last October, I think they would've given a series against the Padres.)
Twins vs Cardinals: The Cardinals were once a great organization that I always disliked (due to them always beating my Dodgers in the playoffs). However, they have fallen on hard times. The Twins have a great lineup and if not for being in the same division as Detroit, Kansas City, and Cleveland, all whom have made the playoffs last year, probably would have contended last year. This is another "too close too call for me," but for some reason, I like the Minnesota Twins in this one!
Tigers vs Dodgers: I will always root for my team, and I will always back them on opening day! The Dodgers haven't lost an opening day game since 2018. (And even then, it was a 1-0 scoreline.) Mookie Betts was battling a major illness as was Freddie Freeman recovering from his ankle last year. However, they have Ohtani, a deep lineup, playing at home, and are the reigning champions. Back the Dodgers all the way!!
Cubs v Diamondbacks: The Diamondbacks are a great team. The Cubs, still look like they need another year before they can contend. I'm taking Arizona at home in this one!
Athletics vs Mariners: On paper Seattle should beat Oakland pretty handily. However, I think the Mariners take this close one, so I'm taking Seattle!
Brewers v Yankees: Even though the Yankees lost game 5 of the WS in calamitous fashion, and have lost Soto via free agency, they're still the Yankees with a stacked batting lineup! I have to take the home side in the Yankees.
