When Clients Become the Industry’s Catch-All Villain

I don’t like throwing around the word stupid. Not so much for the meaning of the word, but more for the disrespect that comes with it. So when a friend sent me this post by a sex worker, and I read it, stupid was the first word that came to mind. Then I saw the same post floating around all over the place, with others basically saying the same thing. The way this SWer explains herself while degrading clients just hits a nerve with me. I want to be understanding, because whenever allegations are brought up people tend to say a lot of unnecessary things, but this one really seems to take the cake.

So, this SWer going by the name Mean Maxine had something to say about male performers. Her exact words are above, stating that male performers are no better than clients who record—saying that we use women as tools to benefit in the industry or the hobby, so to speak. A number of SWers came to the defense of male performers, while others tried creating solutions on how things could be better. Everything from collaborations requiring a fee for male performers to people getting shut down for defending them showed up in this post. As chaotic as all of this was, it isn’t my place to speak on it. I’m not in that world, so my opinion doesn’t really matter. When I really think about it, I don’t care. There were plenty of people defending male performers, and at this point in the industry some do need defending—but there wasn’t one person defending us.

I get that we’re at the bottom of the totem pole. The industry knows clients exist but would rather stay oblivious to anything we do, whether it’s writing reviews or commenting on social media posts. There are some PS providers who acknowledge and understand that this isn’t always just about sex. Is sex a big part of it? Fuck yeah. You want to live out a sexual fantasy with someone you admire and are genuinely attracted to. However, I think it’s more than just sex for a lot of us here. Many of us have been able to build lasting relationships with PS providers something I don’t believe would happen unless those women truly felt comfortable. Beig able to share first names among a plethora of personal acts that can only be done between two people with mutual respect for one another.

For this woman to use us as an example disgusts me. Yes, we get a bad rep because there are some clients out there who can be dangerous, both physically and emotionally. A lot of us think we’re God’s gift to the world to these women, when in reality we’re no different than the last man she saw. So is it surprising that we’re used in this example? No. But just like some male performers, there are also clients who aren’t the best. To say that one male performer being bad somehow extends to everyone who collaborates with women is redundant and the exact same logic applies to clients.

I’m not trying to attack this woman. I just think that with everything that’s happened, everyone wants to get their say. There are some comments out there that make sense, and there are others that really should have been thought through before being posted on the internet. This is one of those things she could have kept to herself.

There's a lot to unpack here...but I don't care for some of the views expressed in that thread. The logic and reasoning behind them are confusing and odd. Everyone is entitled to their opinion tho, no matter how silly it is. But in the end, it doesn't matter because there will always be a sucker somewhere championing them all in the hopes and want to fuck them. Its why I say always to any of my people who get involved in this world, know and understand the situation: You are only a customer.

King, what you described is probably a daydream and fleeting thought that most in this realm have go through their minds. I'm guilty of it too. Trick is not to let it consume you. I always try to keep that mantra at the top of mind. I will say it is nice to daydream sometimes...

Having the label of client at least for me, I can't speak for anyone else here, is a great thing. This is a business; anything involving a money transaction I will treat and respect as a business, and I want to be satisfied. I never heard of Mean Maxine until this post, I don't know if mean is her gimmick or true self, but looking down on male performers and clients is absolutely terrible if they are the main ones paying for your subscriptions. I'll never understand sex workers who hate the industry or those paying for services they still actively participate in.

For every him and James Deen, there are many other male performers who are actively harmful but don’t get flak for it. Nothing about those tweets is directed towards clients.

Those tweets aren't directed towards clients at all. The majority of the tweets that are coming up on flesh mechanic are bad mouthing him and male performers. We didn't come up until this woman had something to say. From my point of view, she's disrespecting male performers and clients who aren't anything like Flesh Mechanic. I could be looking to hard into this, but it seems pretty simple from her post.

I think you might be looking too hard into this. She’s bad mouthing male performers by calling them clients with a camera in the sense that they aren’t providing anything of value to the video. I don’t take that as disrespectful to clients at all — we as clients don’t provide value to videos. The reason for calling them clients at all is because it’s pretty common for so-called / would-be clients to want to get around paying female performers by claiming to be a male performer — it’s meant to be disrespectful to male performers, not clients. I understand the irritation of being lumped in with those clients, but I think it’s akin to the ‘men / not all men’ debate where they’re using the term in a specific context not intended to be taken literally.

Well no, client is purposeful here — there are a lot of would-be clients that either try to get with creators by claiming to be a male performer; that’s a known issue in the industry. A lot of creators don’t actually want to get with non-industry folks in a professional setting, and that’s fine. No one deserves access to anyone else — the point is that she’s calling such male performers frauds.

Honestly, no I don’t think she could’ve. A lot of prospective clients try to wiggle around performers’ “no non-industry professional sex” rule by claiming to be a male performer — and as such, don’t even pay for said sessions. Her entire point is that these male performers are no more professional than “clients with a camera” and I think there are a lot of clients you could say that about. Not those of us here, but the space is much bigger than this site.

Remember that there is an unsaid and historical whoreocracy that some porn actors look down upon escorting and clients.

Also kind of weird that she also implies straight guys need to fuck people besides women to be legitimate talent?

We can go back and forth about what we think what she meant, but I’d rather her clarify. The fact she caused this level of interpretation tells me she’s not very deliberate about her word choice.
