UK Government Declares War on Porn: Mandatory ID Checks Coming

The UK is about to enter a new era of online control, and porn is first in the crosshairs. Starting 25 July 2025, anyone wanting to access adult content online will be required to prove their age using verified ID — because apparently, ticking a box that says "I'm over 18" just isn’t good enough anymore.

In what critics are calling a major overreach and defenders hail as “long overdue,” the government — under Prime Minister Keir Starmer — has officially weaponized the Online Safety Act to clamp down on adult content access, supposedly to "protect children".

Ofcom, now acting as the online content police, has issued stern warnings to hundreds of websites that deal in adult entertainment. Their message? Start implementing “highly effective” age checks, or face fines of up to £18 million or 10% of global revenue. That’s not a slap on the wrist — that’s financial decapitation.

To comply, adult sites may have to roll out verification methods ranging from photo-ID scanning and facial recognition to open banking access and mobile carrier data tracking. Yes, that’s right — watching porn in the UK may soon require you to hand over the kind of personal information you'd normally reserve for your bank or your passport application.

While noble in intent, the move also paints all adult content creators with a broad brush, assuming their work is toxic rather than recognizing the reality: this is a multi-billion pound industry with complex dynamics — from ethical porn and sex education to consenting adult entertainment.

Perhaps most controversial of all is the murky future this paves for anonymous access to the internet. If age verification becomes normalized for porn, could social media, gaming platforms, or even news sites be next?

For now, one thing’s certain: the UK government has drawn a line in the digital sand. You’ll still be able to watch porn — but you’ll have to show your ID first.

Another Starmer banger... or not.
It´s a shame how porn get scolded as much as it does. This has nothing to do with "protecting" the children. It's political warfare.
However, there's work arounds for our British friends.
