In just a few weeks, TikTok will be officially banned in the United States. Although the government voted on this months ago, many didn’t believe it would actually happen. Now, with the ban set to take effect on January 19th, reality is sinking in for everyone—including clients and providers who’ve used the platform for exposure and connection.

960x0.webpSocial media plays a massive role in shaping our choices, whether we like to admit it or not. Many of us wouldn’t even know about some of these incredible providers without platforms like TikTok. Similarly, for providers, social media has been a critical tool for free marketing and outreach. While TikTok might not be the largest platform compared to others like Instagram or Twitter, its impact on exposure—especially for sex workers (SWers)—cannot be overstated.

The ban stems from concerns that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, could be forced by Chinese authorities to share American user data, potentially exposing sensitive information. Whether these fears are rooted in fact or conspiracy, they’ve been enough to drive the decision.

Since its launch, TikTok has evolved from a kids' app into a powerful platform for free speech, marketing, and exposure—both for SFW and NSFW purposes. Many SWers leveraged TikTok’s algorithm to discreetly promote themselves, often with content that toed the line between suggestive and explicit. For clients like myself, TikTok became a trove of discovery, offering glimpses of potential providers who may have otherwise flown under the radar. Losing access to this kind of exposure is disappointing, but it’s the providers who will feel the brunt of the impact.

Take stars like Abigaiil Morris, Alexis Fawx, Eva Lovia, and Kendra Sunderland (Tryst Agency), for example. These adult actresses—and many others—used TikTok as a critical tool to grow their audience and promote their work. Even for those who don’t provide, the loss of the platform could result in diminished income, as TikTok’s massive reach was often a gateway to other revenue streams.

For providers who do offer services, this change could mean fewer inquiries, less traffic to their paid platforms, and a significant disruption in their marketing efforts. On the flip side, the loss of TikTok might also lead to a rise in new providers entering the field, seeking to recoup lost income in other ways.

As clients, the ban might make it slightly harder to discover providers, but the impact on us will be minimal compared to the ripple effect it will have on SWers. For now, the best we can do is adapt, support the providers we care about, and explore other platforms to stay connected with the industry.
