I know this has been discussed before, but I need to vent. It shouldn’t be this difficult or expensive to get tested in NYC, “the city that never sleeps”...

I know this has been discussed before, but I need to vent. It shouldn’t be this difficult or expensive to get tested in NYC, “the city that never sleeps”. First, there are only 2 TTS locations to get tested at in all of Manhattan, both of which are 3rd party medical facilities. These types of facilities all charge draw fees and swab fees, which run around $120 above the standard TTS fee, and testing at a 3rd party location requires an additional $35 FedEx priority overnight fee, or $65 for Saturday delivery. And as I recently discovered, FedEx isn’t always reliable, so you should never trust them enough to test on the last possible day.

I know there are other ways of getting tested, but from what I’ve read, they’re not always easier or cheaper than TTS and are not as universally accepted by providers.

Since I need to be tested for an important date Monday afternoon, I chose to get tested today. I booked a test this morning at the facility on 57th that I’ve used a bunch of times before. When I get there, they tell me they’re out of ice and won’t have any until Friday, so they can’t ship the samples to Miami for testing until then and therefore, can’t take samples until then. If I wait until Friday, I have to pay $65 to get the samples to Miami Saturday morning and if everything goes perfectly, I will be cleared Saturday night. But if anything goes even slightly wrong, my results won’t be in until Monday night and my Monday afternoon plans are significantly less enjoyable.

So I call TTS and change my test location to the other one in downtown Manhattan. That was relatively easy, at least. Then I call the downtown location to make sure they can test me this afternoon and after waiting on hold almost 10 minutes, they tell me they’ve used their last test kit and won’t have any more until Friday.



I call TTS again, and discuss my options. I can wait until Friday, come back to NYC, pay the extra $30 and hope for the best, or go to one of several locations in New Jersey today or tomorrow (too late in the day to be feasible today and Jersey is kind of far to go last minute tomorrow), or I can go to a very inconveniently located facility in Queens tomorrow before 1:30. I chose the Queens location tomorrow, and called them to verify they have test kits and ice, and now have to arrange some work and personal stuff around that. So I came into NYC today from the suburbs for no reason other than to get very frustrated.

Any friends located in NYC, you can’t test here tomorrow. It’s NJ or Queens. But please don’t use up the last test kit or ice in Queens. Please

TTS, you need a wholly-owned BioCollections lab in NYC that doesn’t charge any fees and tests same day. This is unacceptable.

It is concerning that they won't have any testing sites that are well stocked in the largest city in America by population size. And as someone who has visited NYC, it's an absolute nightmare driving around those god awful roads.

Glad you got at least some sort of test lined up.

I will ask though, how is the process to get tested via 3rd party? Are they super reliable logistically? What's the process like when you walk into the 3rd party facility? Do you just say your name and they know what you're in there for?

TTS charges you their own fee and the FedEx fee when you sign up, and you choose which draw facility to use. TTS tells you to walk in and say you’re there for Talent Testing. I’ve used 2 of these 3rd party facilities and every receptionist has known exactly what to do. They ask for your ID and give you some papers to sign, which includes a QR code that you have to scan. That opens a TTS link which tells TTS what time you were there. Then they take your credit card or cash for their fee and either send you off to do the tests or sit and wait. I never waited more than 15 minutes. They draw the blood and do the oral swab but I've always done the anal swab and urine test unsupervised. I’ve never had a receptionist treat me with anything but respect, but one of the lab techs who took my blood a couple of months ago was chatty and curious about why I had been there so many times in such a short span. She assumed I was working but seemed to be trying to dig into how. I just had a bunch of poorly timed dates that required it. I was vague about it but made it sound like it was a side gig. I definitely don’t have a face, body or age to be a porn star. Although compared to TadPole, I’m a downright Adonis

I’m always worried that all samples won’t be shipped together, or that something will go wrong with the samples or the draw facility will forget to ship or something will go wrong with FedEx or TTS, but so far, other than FedEx almost screwing me over a few weeks ago, they haven’t messed up yet. I figure it’s only a matter of time before I’m actually screwed over, though.

It's $179 for gold panel, and another $99 for mgen (not a swab test). The processing time for the usual gold panel (10 tests) is typically next day in my experience.

The oral and anal swabs are for chlamydia and gonorrhea and are separate from the urine test for those 2 that’s part of the gold panel, and I’ve been repeatedly told that the swabs are required.

So that’s $278 for the tests alone without the extra swab tests. But can you just go to Quest and request them? I thought you needed someone to prescribe? Don’t you have to go to someone else to prescribe and pay them, too? That’s more money and coordination, isn’t it? With a risk that someone won’t accept it as a full test?

I looked at their site and it looks like it’s just $297 without additional fees, but still doesn’t include the swabs. Maybe @trystagency can confirm if the swabs are required or preferred in general, or if any providers could say they won’t consider you fully tested without them. I’ll pay more and be inconvenienced more if it means guaranteeing BBFS versus risking someone saying “no swabs, no bare”.

TTS primarily services the porn industry, they're not trying to acquire locations to make it easier for mongers outside of LA/Miami to get tested before fucking their favorite pornstar. The real pain is that the porn industry only accepts TTS and one other testing facility. Their service is not unique, plenty of other places provide it, as you mentioned with Quest. I use stdcheck.com myself. If they opened an NYC location, they'd swiftly lose money competing against Quest and Labcorp, who offer STD testing that is acceptable for anyone outside of porn, but at cheaper prices and less hassle with locations.

I also ran into the "out of ice" problem at the 57th street location. Good thing going downtown means I'm close to Katz's to grab a sandwich afterwards.

I had more discomfort when I burned my mouth on a hot bite of food at dinner tonight than with all of the anal swabs combined, and I've had about 15 tests done. I don't want to risk being turned down for BBFS because I didn't have a swab done. Better safe than sorry.

It's $15 more than the Manhattan locations, but it's relatively conveniently located for me now that I figured out how to get there without driving, and the doctor and staff I've seen there always treat me like royalty. I feel like they handle my samples and my business like their professional lives depend on doing it right, where in Manhattan, I feel like they are nonchalant about it and could mess up without even thinking.
