Rethinking the Logic of Rates

A couple of days ago, I found myself in one of those random group convos—the kind that starts off as a one-on-one and then suddenly balloons into six people all chiming in. What started casual turned into a 45-minute deep dive on a topic I thought I understood, rates. How providers set them, what influences them, and what we as clients assume they mean.

The convo kicked off when a friend told us about a provider he was booking off TrystLink. Now, this wasn’t one of those faces you just scroll past. She’s stunning—the kind of provider you double back on just to make sure the page is legit. The layout, the photos, the tone… all polished. Add to that a verified X account with nearly half a million followers, some solid content showcasing her style, and it was clear this wasn’t some throwaway account. She’s the real deal. Everything about her gave “seasoned, high-end provider” vibes… except her rates. That’s where everything stopped making sense. Her rate was below $500—and not in an “intro special” kind of way. We’re talking what you’d expect to see on Backpage, not Tryst.

My friend had done his homework, though. Verified the page, messaged her, spoke to her enough to feel confident. He’s going to see her soon and plans to report back, because naturally, we were all curious. But that price point had my brain in a twist. Everything about her screamed that she should be in another bracket altogether. It went against everything I believed about the hobby.

See, I’ve always thought rates followed a kind of logic—beauty, content, status, following, experience. Not just random numbers. Sure, I know there are gems out there, but even gems tend to match their worth. That’s what had me spiraling. Then another friend threw me a curveball.

This one’s deeper into the Instagram hobby scene. That lane has opened up a lot, but there’s still a layer of exclusivity—some providers only respond to DMs, no ads, no platforms. He told me about a woman he booked for $3,000 overnight. One look at her she could’ve easily charged double. Drop-dead gorgeous, enhanced body, fully curated online presence. By every measure, she’s a ten.

But here’s where it got weird—she was flexible on rates. My friend explained it in a way that made sense but still left me scratching my head. For instance, if she flew to see you on her own dime, maybe paid by a previous client, she could afford to charge less. That way, whatever she makes from you is pure profit. Or maybe she’s visiting multiple clients on one trip and spreading her costs. It's basically the economics of volume and strategy over a flat price model. That blew my mind a little. Because at that point, rates stop reflecting status and start reflecting circumstance.

Is it all supply and demand? Geography? Personal vibe? Are some providers intentionally undercutting to stay busy? Or do some just love the game?

That’s kind of where we landed in the end. Maybe some of these women really do it for the love of the game. Maybe for them, the excitement, the connection, the experience is worth more than holding a hard line on price. I’m still in my head about it. I don’t know if any of this makes true sense or if I’m just overthinking it all. But one thing’s clear: in this game, anything’s possible.
