A couple of days ago, I came across an article that could have implications for the hobby. I say this because there’s little that happens in the world that doesn’t somehow connect back to it. Given the location and the woman involved, there’s a strong possibility this situation does as well.
In an article written by Radha Stirling for Detained in Dubai, he details the brutal assault of 20-year-old Ukrainian OnlyFans model Maria Kovalchuk. Stirling, the CEO of Detained in Dubai, argues that the UAE’s image as a “crime-free” destination is misleading, as many women face violence and injustice—often with no legal recourse. While this is true by many civilian accounts, we know this issue extends beyond just OnlyFans models.
Kovalchuk, who now suffers from multiple broken limbs and a broken spine, told her mother, Anna Kovalchuk, that she had traveled to Dubai and was staying with two men representing a modeling agency. What exactly happened during the 10 days she was missing remains unclear, and there’s little information on who these men actually were.
Stirling highlights a disturbing reality—women who report assault in the UAE risk being treated as criminals themselves due to strict morality laws. He references cases like Selina Waterman-Smith, who was gang-raped but met with disbelief when she reported it, and Roxanne Hillier, who was imprisoned for "adultery" despite medical evidence proving otherwise.
Dubai has always had a certain reputation in the hobby. We’ve all heard stories, and this situation only reinforces what many of us already suspected: whatever happens there, stays there—because the system ensures it rarely makes it to the outside world.
I won’t sugarcoat this. If you’re thinking what I’m thinking, you’re not alone. How many civilian women do you know who would fly to Dubai and stay with two unknown men based solely on the claim that they run a modeling agency? Not many. But if you bring that same offer to an OnlyFans model who might dabble in more than just content creation, it wouldn’t be surprising if they considered it.
Given what we’ve all heard about Dubai, it’s entirely possible that the rumors are true and young women are actively being lured there under false pretenses. Some go willingly—multiple times a year—to indulge in who knows what. But who’s to say Maria wasn’t doing the same, only for things to spiral out of control?
This story is bound to put fear into some women, especially those who travel frequently. But at the same time, we all know that for many, the chase for money will always outweigh the risk.
