Here's something I didn't know. If you're a sex worker (provider) in Tennessee and have HIV you could go to jail if you're caught providing. At least that was the case up until about a week ago.
The Tennessee government has decided to take people off the sex offender registry if they were convicted of prostitution while having HIV. Normally, prostitution is just a misdemeanor, but it's a felony for those with HIV, even if they use protection. Back in 2010, the state made it even tougher by classifying it as a "violent sexual offense," requiring lifetime registration as a sex offender.
The ACLU and the Department of Justice sued the state, saying that labeling someone a sex offender because of HIV makes it really hard for them to find jobs or housing and keeps them from being alone with grandkids or minors. The ACLU pointed out that this law was mostly used in the Memphis area and often against Black and transgender women.
Governor Bill Lee signed an agreement on July 15 to have the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation go through the sex offender registry and remove those who were added because of aggravated prostitution convictions.
This is something I'm a little indifferent about given what we know about the hobby and the people that can be in it. I actually watched a documentary on how having HIV in certain parts of the US can somehow have you end up on the sex offender registry thereby making if difficult to lead a normal life. With this law now be revoked after being in affect for so long some providers who have HIV might see this as a way of providing once again.
The sex offender registry is an extremely important list and should get revisited again to take certain HIV positive people off it who doesn't fit the crime. That being said, for a provider to knowingly provide being HIV positive should have more consequences. This is just letting so many providers run around to possibly spread a horrible STD even if they're using a condom.
Either way, You Tennesse clients need to be careful. This should go without saying, but BB should not be thought of unless a gold panel test is seen. Thing's can happen in the heat of the moment, I know that for sure, but nothing is worth catching a life changing disease. Stay safe, Pervs!
