North Korean soldiers deployed to support Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine are experiencing a surprising distraction: the unrestricted internet. For many of these troops, accustomed to North Korea’s rigidly controlled “Kwangmyong” intranet, Russia’s internet offers a wealth of previously unseen material — and a significant number of soldiers are reportedly turning their attention to adult content.
Unlike the limited, propaganda-laden content available in North Korea, the open internet in Russia has proven to be an unexpected temptation for these soldiers, many of whom are encountering unrestricted online access for the first time. For a country where full internet access is reserved for a small elite, the exposure has led to what some are describing as a cultural shock, and the soldiers’ new internet habits have drawn attention.
The funny thing is that prostitution is banned in North Korea, and those caught — both clients and sex workers — can be sent to labor camps. So, the North Korean troops are certainly enjoying the free world!
