On January 27, 2024, she checked herself into Summit Malibu, a high-end rehab facility nestled in California’s celebrity-soaked coastline. What was supposed to be a healing retreat turned into a horrifying descent.
Cardiac Arrest, Coma, and a Lawsuit
According to court filings, Willis began suffering intense symptoms during her stay: chills, tremors, confusion, pain, and a dangerously elevated heart rate. Her condition spiraled until February 4th, when she was found unresponsive. It took
40 minutes of CPR to restore her heartbeat.
She survived, but not intact.
Today, Willis is reportedly conscious but unable to move or speak — her only form of communication is through her eyes. Doctors believe she may be suffering from
locked-in syndrome, a rare and terrifying neurological condition. Few have ever fully recovered from it.
The Case Against the Clinic
Willis' mother, Yesenia Lara Cooper, filed a lawsuit on December 27, 2024, accusing the clinic of negligence that allegedly led to her daughter’s catastrophic brain injury. The suit claims that
staff failed to monitor or respond appropriately to her symptoms, violating standard medical protocol.
“Had the staff followed standard medical protocols,” the lawsuit states, “Emily would have had the opportunity to regain control of her life.”
It describes her current state as involving "irreversible brain damage, permanent physical and mental incapacity, pain, and emotional distress.”
Summit Malibu and its parent company
deny wrongdoing and are now
fighting the claim in court — not to run from it, but to challenge its legal foundation.
What’s Happening Now?
A
hearing on demurrer and a motion to strike is scheduled for
June 18 at the Santa Monica Courthouse. This means the defense is asking the court to either
remove portions of the lawsuit — or possibly dismiss the entire claim if it fails to meet legal standards.
Also happening on the same date: a
Case Management Conference, an early-stage hearing to help define the direction of the case and identify if any parts can be resolved or dismissed before trial.
