If there's one thing that comes up in forums, it's ways to prevent bringing anything home from your sessions. What doesn't come up too often, but is very dangerous to the community, is herpes. This is one of the biggest fears so many of us have in the hobby: catching something that is irreversible and sticks with you your entire life. Some of us couldn't care less about catching this, admitting it comes with the territory of the hobby, while others live in fear that all they're leaving with from their session is memories and peace of mind.
Well, I'm here to give some clients that peace of mind, so to speak. We all know research is being done every day on better ways to treat and one day destroy the herpes virus. Yesterday, an article was published on the Newsweek website about a breakthrough scientists are calling significant information.
This article discusses a recent discovery regarding how the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infiltrates nerve cells, shedding light on potential new treatment avenues. Researchers found that the virus hijacks cellular transport processes, particularly microtubules and motor proteins like dynein and kinesin, to enter nerve cells efficiently. This understanding could lead to the development of more effective treatments. I had to look up what half of this all meant.

The study's authors from Northwestern University are hopeful that their findings will pave the way for novel therapies targeting herpes infections. Gregory Smith, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Northwestern University, said, 'We knew how to mutate them so they didn't get to the nervous system. But we didn't have a complete understanding mechanistically of why our mutations were so effective.'
If you're in this hobby, it's impossible for you not to know what herpes is. Herpes, or as some people call it HSV, is a common infection that can cause painful blisters or ulcers. There are two types (HSV-1), which is oral herpes, and (HSV-2), which is genital herpes. This is by far one of the easiest viruses to contract in the hobby, given it can be transmitted with a touch or, in our case, with a kiss.
Since we now have this new information on the virus, I want to make this clear: this does not mean this is a cure. If anything, it's a step in the right direction to better treatment for those who already have the virus and hopefully a cure one day, but that's all it is. It doesn't mean any of us can go about being wild and reckless with this new information brought to us. You should still be tested and safe at all times. Even though normal tests can't pick up herpes unless it's specifically being looked for, it doesn't matter. Get tested.
If you want more information on this you can read the article here. Be safe, Pervs!
