Kat Torres, a former model from Brazil - has been sentenced to eight years in prison for her involvement in trafficking and the enslavement of several women.
The case, investigated by the FBI and Brazilian authorities, began in 2022 when two young Brazilian women living with Torres were reported missing. The women were later discovered to have been trafficked and coerced into exploitative conditions. Torres, who was once linked to Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio, is accused of targeting vulnerable followers who admired her alleged transformation from a poor Brazilian upbringing to a glamorous life among Hollywood’s elite.
Victim Stories Reveal Abuse
Ana, one of Torres’ first known victims, recounted her ordeal in an interview with BBC Eye Investigations and BBC News Brazil. She explained that she discovered Torres’ Instagram profile in 2017 and was drawn to her inspiring narrative of overcoming childhood violence and abuse. Torres’ claims of spiritual powers and appearances in celebrity circles further cemented her allure.
“She kind of resembled hope for me,” Ana said. “She seemed like she had overcome violence in her childhood, abuse, all these traumatic experiences.”
In 2019, Ana moved to New York to work as Torres’ live-in assistant, hoping to escape her own troubled past. However, she was shocked by the conditions she encountered. The house was filthy, and she was forced to sleep on a beat-up sofa.
“I felt like, ‘I’m stuck here, I don’t have a way out,’” Ana revealed. She described enduring unpaid labor, sleep deprivation, and emotional manipulation before eventually escaping with the help of a boyfriend.
Recruiting Through Deception
After Ana’s escape, Torres reportedly continued to target her most loyal followers, promising them a “fairytale life.” Two additional victims, Desirre and Leticia, were recruited under false pretenses. Desirre was immediately coerced into working at a strip club, with Torres allegedly using threats of witchcraft and financial quotas to control her.
The women were forbidden from speaking to each other, restricted in their movements, and required to seek permission for basic activities like leaving their rooms or using the bathroom.
Rescue and Conviction
When the families of Desirre and Leticia launched a social media campaign to find them in September 2022, Torres forced the women to move from Texas to Maine. She also coerced them into recording videos denying their captivity and demanding an end to the search efforts.
In November 2022, law enforcement officers lured Torres and the women to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Maine under the guise of a welfare check. The two women were rescued and safely returned to Brazil in December.
By July 2023, Torres was sentenced by a Brazilian court to eight years in prison for subjecting Desirre to human trafficking and slavery. Since her arrest, over 20 women have come forward with claims of being scammed or exploited by Torres.
