I don’t believe this is anything new. I’ve encountered many providers over the years, and even though I’ve never asked or seen a weapon, I naturally assumed they had one. Now, however, providers are actively seeking ways to empower others in their profession to carry a weapon—more specifically, a gun—and I fully support that.
Some people, particularly clients, argue against this idea, suggesting it could be dangerous if a provider were to draw a weapon on them for any reason. While that concern is valid, I would respond with,
What do you think the provider was feeling before deciding to arm herself?
The provider who raised this topic shared accounts of tragic incidents that were hard to hear, but tragically true. She spoke about a friend in the industry who went missing, only to be found a year later in a storage locker. Another provider was killed and set on fire—she was also pregnant when this happened to her. For providers facing the risk of being beaten, raped, or worse, arming themselves becomes a reasonable, if not necessary, choice. In this light, the question of whether they should carry weapons feels almost rhetorical.
Escorts often work in private, sometimes unfamiliar environments, which can make them vulnerable to threats. Many argue that allowing escorts to carry weapons would provide them with a means of protection, especially when working alone or in high-risk situations. Being licensed to carry a weapon could offer them a level of security, allowing them to defend themselves if they encounter a threatening situation.
Additionally, the right to self-defense is a fundamental principle that should apply to all individuals, regardless of profession. Providers, like anyone else, face real risks of violence, and they should be able to protect themselves. Knowing that a provider is armed might make an aggressor think twice, potentially reducing the likelihood of an attack. In this sense, allowing escorts to carry weapons could help create a safer environment for others in the industry.
Some argue that there are alternative methods of protection, such as hand-to-hand self-defense training, enhanced screening, and careful travel planning.
Certainly, providers can and do use these methods, including carrying non-lethal tools like pepper spray and stun guns. These approaches often come with fewer legal restrictions and offer defensive capabilities without as much risk of escalation. But if these were always effective, there wouldn’t be such a strong movement toward arming oneself. Screening and travel planning can help, but they’re not foolproof. Screening doesn’t reveal everything about a person’s intentions, and some providers meticulously plan their trips for safety as best as they can, especially as many are women who need to consider every detail. Yet, as valuable as these practices are, they may not always be enough.
Ultimately, the question of whether escorts should be allowed to carry a licensed weapon isn’t just about the right to self-defense. It’s about balancing personal safety, responsibility, and legal protections. While arming escorts could add a layer of protection, it also raises various legal, ethical, and practical concerns. For many, non-lethal alternatives and stronger industry regulations might provide a safer, less risky way to ensure safety for both escorts and the community at large.
