The story of 20-year-old Ukrainian model Maria Kovalchuk, who was found with a shattered spine, arms, and legs on a roadside in Dubai, has taken a major turn: Ukrainian police have officially opened a human trafficking investigation.
Kovalchuk, who had been missing for over a week, was located by Ukrainian diplomats in a Dubai hospital after what authorities in the UAE claim was a "fall from height" at a construction site. But many close to her — including friends and fellow models — aren’t buying that explanation.
Instead, they suspect she may have been lured into one of Dubai’s infamous “porta potty parties” — ultra-private gatherings where wealthy men allegedly pay young women for extreme sexual degradation, under the guise of modeling or influencer gigs.
Now, police in her hometown of Lviv have confirmed they’re pursuing the case as a potential instance of cross-border human trafficking. According to reports, Maria had told friends she was meeting two men claiming to be from the modeling industry shortly before her disappearance. Days later, she was found battered, unable to speak, and abandoned like trash.
The Ukrainian consulate in Dubai has been actively involved since Maria’s mother raised the alarm, and helped track her to the hospital. While Dubai police continue to downplay the incident as accidental, Ukrainian authorities clearly see something more sinister at play.
