My mind was wandering. When you sign up for the first time at Tryst or PC and pay the $99 "verification fee", is that considered a processing fee that the agency keeps, a fee for a criminal background check fee conducted by a third party service, or something in between?

There are fees involved with verifying new members, whether paid or free/with references.
Just like as a client you want to make sure that all the models on the two sites are real, they want to make sure you are real as well.
Both websites do not do a criminal background check, but they do do other checks on your application.
AI biometrics on your selfie and ID
Private and third-party blacklist checks
..and a few other things.
If you have valid references within the past 2 years, this fee is waived (the websites eat the associated costs), as a courtesy to you.
The verifications are lifetime and as an added bonus, on both sites, you can see current and active pricing when you are logged in.
Besides, neither website will honor a booking request unless you are verified. It protects them, you and the models.

Besides, with the horror stories out there of some crazy dudes assaulting girls, and crazy girls stealing from clients, i don't blame either site for requiring verification up front.
Tryst also has other bonuses for member. There are stories of him making things right with clients when things go wrong or a girl doesn't show up for some reason. I guess membership DOES have its privileges.
