I also am a bit frustrated with the whole MGEN thing as of recent. After doing research and speaking to several Physicians whom I trust, and speaking to some of my good friends that do porn, it kind of seems like this is probably more about the testing agencies making more $ by scaring people unnecessarily to pay more $ for yet another test add on. Of course everyone will have their own opinion on this which they are of course entitled to. But Mgen has been around since the 80's, and has never been in routine STD screening and is not recommended for routine screening by the CDC. It is suggested that if someone has symptoms but is negative for the other STD's, then that is tested for. It is something that for most is asymptomatic and also goes away on its own. Now of course if you have come in contact with someone who tested positive for it, then steps to test and treat should be done. People need to keep in mind that using antibiotics also come with their own risks......especially one of the ones that is used to treat MGEN. They will usually prescribe Doxy and another one that is much stronger (and probably not necessary in most cases) that can cause long term negative side effects. Not to mention antiobitic resistance. The Drs I inquired about this stated they didn't see the point in routine testing for this as it does not seem to cause issues except for the occasions where it becomes symptomatic and in that case needs to be treated. The organism is quickly becoming resistant to antibiotics, and stronger ones are having to be taken which then causes more issues. One place I read that about half of all women have this, but as said before typically does not cause symptoms in healthy individuals and can resolve on its own. So if we start to include this in routine testing and treating it, it will quickly start to become more and more resistant to antibiotics making it harder to treat when necessary, and use of stronger antibiotics needed when symptomatic. But always do your research and ask questions!!
