Off Topic - fixing external hard drive

So my Western Digital external drive with a lot of my personal videos has apparently crashed. Trying various software repair techniques, it seems to transfer data very slowly. It's file system is Mac journaled encrypted. I might need to send it to a repair place but I can't really do anything that might give them access to the files both because I don't want to end up in someone's personal collection and in some cases I've promised the girl that nobody else will ever see the footage, so it would be limited to seeing if they can see what's wrong in the hardware. Just curious if anyone has any experience with dealing with this kind of issue. It's not making any unusual noises, but I think the data has become corrupt.

I've tried a different USB cable
I've tried connecting it with a different computer
I've managed, after much difficulty, to get Disk Utility to see it and have ran First Aid but it didn't fix the issue

Lesson is to make backups, which unfortunately I didn't do.
