They give you a swab and tell you to swab your own ass in the restroom. Then put it into the tube and break off the handle, then give that back to them. They don't check what you actually did. The most I've ever had someone talk to me about the process was one nurse who mentioned "it's normal to have some feces on the tip, you can still submit it like that."

I've happened to have clean buttholes during the swab and it comes out looking unused, the person taking the sample doesn't stare at you suspiciously and go "DID YOU REAAAALLLY SHOVE IT UP THERE BUDDY???" Don't be nervous.

I asked at both the Orlando TTS location and 2 different third party draw facilities in NYC to see if I got the same answer and all 3 said a variation of the same thing: use the swab like toilet paper. So no need to insert it anywhere. Just wipe it around your crack and outside of your rectum.

I’ve done it 3 times and skipped the rectal one once. I asked TSC if it was OK beforehand. But the throat one bothers me more anyway.

This is not accurate. Per both CLEAR and TTS you:

"Insert the tip of the swab into your anus. This is the opening on your bottom where stool comes out. Insert the swab about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) into your rectum. Turning the
swab around as you insert it may make it easier to insert. Turn the swab around in a circle while it is in your rectum. Turn the swab so that it touches the inside of your rectum. Make a complete turn at least 2 times."

So, YES it goes inside your ass.

My results never came back inconclusive, although I’m not sure if results would indeed be inconclusive or a false negative.

This would probably be better shared over a beer or dm but whatever - the first time I got tested I was handed the urine sample kit and swab (I did the swab in my throat).
Right before the blood draw they came in to do what I thought was the ‘other’ swab. When I stood up and unbuckled my pants they knew I did the first one wrong
